In 1755, the Cathedral Chapter of Santiago de Compostela commissioned Lucas Antonio Ferro Caaveiro to draw up the plans for the new façade of the Azabachería, which replaced the medieval portal; he was also commissioned to design this house, consisting of a ground floor with arcades, a first floor with elongated balconies and a central projecting balcony, and a second floor with three balconies and coats of arms. The building is crowned by a prominent projecting cornice, at whose ends there are polygonal gargoyles. Hotel España was one of the city’s most sought-after. The heraldic shields adorning the façade are ecclesiastical. Unlike many rural Galician pazos, this is an urban pazo, known as Pazo Pedrosa: a stately residence integrated into the fabric of the historic city. Rúa Nova was an important street within the medieval enclosure and concentrated the homes of well-to-do families and institutions. The architecture preserves very characteristic features of Compostela Baroque: ashlar construction, a ground floor with arcades designed to protect from the weather and encourage urban activity. It is important to note that the staircase is preserved; it begins with a stone flight and a powerful stone pillar. The heraldic shields do not appear to be simple shields of a single lineage, but rather a more elaborate ensemble, possibly intended to represent family alliances or institutional dignity (something relatively common in buildings linked to urban elites and to the Chapter’s milieu in Santiago de Compostela).
