Cuasso al Monte, located at the foot of Mount Piambello, is one of the largest municipalities in the province of Varese. The municipality is separated by a thin strip of land from Lake Lugano and consists of the hamlets of Cuasso al Lago, Cuasso al Piano, Borgnana, Cavagnano, San Salvatore Zotte. All the centres are characterized by the presence of buildings built with local stone with the characteristic pink colour. The municipality is part of the main basin of Lake Maggiore and the secondary basin of Lake Lugano, otherwise called Ceresio. It is a pre-Alpine lake branched along the Italian-Swiss border with an area of 48. 7 km², of which about 18 km² belong to the Italian Republic. Ceresio is the Italianization of the Latin name Ceresium, of uncertain etymology: according to some it is to be identified in an ancient Roman toponym "Ceresium" whose more accurate translation would be: "bluer of the sky". Others, however, report that the name comes from the Celtic "keresius" which means "branched" and in fact the shape of Lake Ceresio is actually branched, with several branches. The centre of the provincial capital, Varese, and the motorway to Milan are 16 km away, while Malpensa International Airport is 55 km away. The Swiss border can be easily reached by 8 km. After 20 km you reach the coast of Lake Maggiore. Just 2 km away we reach the pretty center of the municipality of Porto Ceresio, a pretty and characteristic town overlooking the lake and served with all the main services needed, supermarkets, typical restaurants, shops, the railway station that connects Varese and Milan and finally the pier for boats that connect Porto Ceresio to Switzerland.
