The city of Varese is situated on the shores of the lake of the same name. It is called the Garden City thanks to its numerous and splendid private and public gardens located within the municipality. The city of Varese is in a characteristic location, at the foot of the Sacro Monte di Varese, which is part of the Campo dei Fiori Massif and is home to an astronomical observatory. Varese is nestled on seven hills: Colle di San Pedrino (402 m), Colle di Giubiano (407 m), Colle Campigli (453 m), Colle di Sant'Albino (406 m), Colle di Biumo Superiore (439 m), Colle di Montalbano (411 m), and Colle dei Miogni (492 m). Therefore, the municipal territory ranges from 238 to 1,150 meters above sea level. The Varese winter is little affected by the mitigating influence of Lake Maggiore and the other smaller lakes in the province. Late autumn and winter minimum temperatures frequently, albeit by a few degrees, drop below zero. It is precisely the low nighttime temperatures that create a different climate for areas south of this city. As in other Lombard pre-alpine cities, fog is a rare phenomenon. Since 1960, it has been home to the only Italian branch of the European School created for the children of European officials of the Joint Research Centre. The airports of Milan Malpensa and Lugano Agno are about 30 minutes away. The shores of Lake Maggiore can be reached in 20 minutes by car.
