History of the Mansion: The Romeu House-Palace is a small urban palace located in Valencia’s historic center, very close to the cathedral and the former noble district of La Seu–Xerea. The house belonged to the noble Romeu family, a lineage documented in Valencia since the 14th century. The first member mentioned in the city was Gil Jiménez Romeu, a knight who took part in the Valencian Cortes of 1329; his son Juan Jiménez Romeu was a jurat (city councillor) of Valencia in 1332 and Lord of Alcácer. The current building has roots predating the 18th century, although it was thoroughly remodeled around 1858 by the Valencian architect José Zacarías Camaña Burcet, which explains its 19th-century appearance.Architecture It is a relatively narrow palatial residence, typical of the Valencian urban nobility. The coat of arms The heraldic relief above the door has been protected as a Property of Cultural Interest since 1996. It depicts: a black eagle on a silver field, three chained stakes, and a flory cross in the other quarter, with a border of saltires. Salvador Street forms part of the historic route of the Via Augusta, which crossed the Roman city of Valencia, Valentia.
