Municipality of Llivia

Llivia is a small enclave of spanish territory within France. It is a town belonging to the cerdanya region, surrounded by French villages, but which remains linked to Spain by a single road of only 5 km considered neutral. This geographical "oddity" is due to the Treaty of the Pyrenees of 1659 in which the Kingdom of Spain ceded 33 villages to France, with the exception of Llivia because of its status as a town.

However, in addition to its unique geographical location, Llivia is a welcoming village situated at the foot of an imposing medieval castle, now in ruins, but which still bears witness to the town's historical past. Surrounded by lush forests, lakes and beautiful meadows, Llivia invites you to stay and explore its wonderful attractions.

Llivia, a town steeped in history

Despite being a small town, Llivia is steeped in history, with links to legendary characters such as Hercules, to whom the founding of the town is attributed. It is said among the local historians that Hannibal in his famous campaign to conquer Rome, passed through Llivia with his army and elephants. The cultural richness of the town is due to the different occupations it has suffered over the centuries: firstly by the romans, then by the muslims and, later, by the visigoths. These historical periods contribute to the diverse and unique landscape that Llivia has today.

If you are a lover of the medieval times, you cannot miss a visit to the medieval castle of Llivia, the place where the foundations for the construction of the town were laid. In addition, the Roman Forum, still under excavation, is still an archaeological attraction. Llivia also houses the Municipal Museum, known as the Pharmacy Museum and a splendid church of late Gothic style, built on the site of an ancient Romanesque church, where majestic concerts are held. You can also explore the Bernat del So, another of the historical landmarks of the area.
