A little history of Fontanals de Cerdanya
The municipality of Fontanals de Cerdanya is the result of the merger of the municipalities of Queixans and Urtx in 1969, although today it also includes other towns that were previously part of both municipalities. Urtx was a fief in the 11th century, belonging to the counts of Catalonia, but in 1316 it became the property of the king. The population of Urtx began to decrease from the 14th to the 16th century, although from the 17th century onwards, the population increased, reaching just over 470 inhabitants in 1859. It was in 1950 when there was again a demographic decline, but since the union of the municipalities, the population has been increasing, and many people now use their homes as second homes attracted by the alternatives and attractions offered by the municipality. The most popular residential areas include La Coma in Queixans, Les Pereres, Soriguerola and El Vilar de Urtx.

Activities in Fontanals de Cerdanya
One of the main attractions of Fontanals de Cerdanya is its golf course at Soriguerola, the Fontanals Golf. This golf club, inaugurated in 2003, has recently been renovated to modernise its facilities and make them more environmentally sustainable. The club has a surface area of approximately 3.000 square metres and has a large car park for its visitors. In addition, the complex is home to the Restaurant Fontanals Green which offers market cuisine, and a chill-out area on its terrace, ideal for enjoying an aperitif. There is also a 4-star hotel, the Hotel Fontanals Golf with well-equipped and furnished rooms, perfect for a comfortable and relaxing stay.
Another of the most popular activities among the tourists is touring the romanesque architecture of the region. Fontanals has several churches of great simplicity, but of enormous historical value. Inside, it is common to find paintings (altar frontals or murals) and popular sculptures such as the representations of Christ and the Virgin and Child Jesus carved in wood.
At Les Pereres, you can visit the church of Sant Esteve, a Romanesque church from the XII-XIII Century, restored in 1992 after the damage suffered during the Civil War. Notable on its walls are the rows of opus spicatum with a height of up to 2.80 metres.
The church of Sant Martí de Urtx also of Romanesque origin, is part of the county's heritage. Although its frontispiece and the bell tower are more modern constructions, it is still an emblematic place. Another example of the religious architecture of the area is the chapel of San Miguel in Soriguerola which dates back to the 11th century and has a rectangular nave covered with a barrel vault.
