Can you imagine the moment Pope Leo XIV steps onto the dock at Arguineguín, looks out at the Atlantic and places a flower on the water in memory of those who never made it? 11 June 2026 will be written into the history of the Canary Islands forever. For the very first time, the archipelago will receive a visit from a reigning pope.
Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost, arrives in Gran Canaria as part of his apostolic journey to Spain from 6 to 12 June. His time on the island will be anything but ceremonial: the Holy Father chose the Canary Islands precisely because of what they represent on the human map of Atlantic migration.
For those of us who live here or have chosen Gran Canaria as home, this visit is far more than a religious event. It is a worldwide recognition of the island, its people and the humanitarian work carried out every day along its southern coast.

Pope Leo XIV’s first visit to Gran Canaria: what it means for the island
Since the Diocese of the Canary Islands was founded, no successor of Peter had ever set foot in the archipelago. Pope Leo XIV’s visit in June 2026 breaks a centuries-old tradition and puts the Canary Islands at the centre of worldwide attention.
It is no coincidence that the Pope chose the Canary Islands to close his journey through Spain. The Atlantic migration route, linking the coasts of West Africa to the islands, is one of the deadliest in the world. Pope Leo XIV has wanted to come and put a human face on that reality.
The visit is part of the Vatican’s official apostolic journey to Spain, which includes Madrid and Barcelona before reaching the Canary Islands.
Pope Leo XIV’s arrival in Gran Canaria: time and point of entry
Pope Leo XIV will land at Gando Air Base on Thursday 11 June at 10:50 am. From there he will head without delay to the south of the island, towards Arguineguín.
His stay in Gran Canaria will last just over eight hours: an intense agenda that will travel the island from south to north, from the port of Mogán to the stadium in Las Palmas.
Pope Leo XIV in Arguineguín: the most symbolic act of the visit
The first act will take place at 11:40 am at the port of Arguineguín, in the municipality of Mogán. It is the most symbolically charged moment of the entire visit.
In 2020, the Arguineguín dock became the harshest symbol of the Canary Islands’ migration crisis. Thousands of people who had arrived by boat from Mauritania, Senegal and Morocco spent days crammed together without basic conditions. The images went around the world and earned the site the nickname “dock of shame”.
Today, the Church wants that same place to become the “dock of hope”. The event will be attended by around 2,000 people, 75% of them migrants from Latin America and Africa. The programme includes:
A floral offering to the Atlantic in memory of those who lost their lives at sea.
First-hand testimonies from migrants.
The blessing of a cross built from boat timber.
A speech by the Pope on the dignity of migrants and their rights.
Pope Leo XIV’s visit to the Cathedral of Santa Ana in Vegueta
After Arguineguín, Pope Leo XIV will travel to the historic heart of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. At 1:10 pm there will be a reception at the Teatro Pérez Galdós, and at 1:30 pm he will arrive at the Cathedral of Santa Ana, in the Vegueta district.
The encounter is private in nature: the Holy Father will meet with bishops, priests, nuns, seminarians and pastoral workers of the Diocese of the Canary Islands. Pope Leo XIV will sign the diocese’s honour book and address a few words to the representatives of the Canarian Church.
At 2:15 pm he will have a private break at the Bishop’s Palace before the main event of the afternoon.

Pope Leo XIV’s mass at Gran Canaria Stadium
At 5:30 pm, the Pope will begin his popemobile tour around Gran Canaria Stadium, greeting the thousands of people gathered in the area.
At 6:30 pm the Eucharist at Gran Canaria Stadium will begin — the most attended event in the island’s recent history. The mass will feature the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra (OFGC) and its Choir.
From 2:00 pm, the Stadium Annex will open as an entertainment area with performances by Los Gofiones, Cristina Ramos and Yeray Rodríguez, among others. For access to the mass, check the official website of the Diocese of the Canary Islands.
Pope Leo XIV’s agenda in Tenerife: programme for 12 June
After spending the night in Gran Canaria, the Pope will travel to Tenerife on the morning of Friday 12 June:
9:10 am — Arrival at Tenerife Norte.
9:30 am — Visit to the Las Raíces Reception Centre, with a direct encounter with migrants housed there.
10:10 am — Meeting with civil society organisations at the Plaza del Cristo de La Laguna.
12:15 pm — Closing mass at the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
3:00 pm — Farewell ceremony and return to Rome.
The full programme can be consulted at the official visit website.
How to attend the Pope’s events in Gran Canaria
If you want to be there on 11 June, the first thing to know is which event you can actually access. The Arguineguín encounter is restricted — around 2,000 people with prior accreditation. If you are interested, contact the Diocese of the Canary Islands as soon as possible.
The mass at the Stadium is the main open-access event. If you are looking for tickets or a pass for Pope Leo XIV’s mass at Gran Canaria Stadium, access is managed through the official diocesan website. Request yours as early as possible — spaces are limited.
Transport will be the big challenge of the day. The GC-1 motorway and the area around Las Palmas will face progressive traffic closures throughout the day. The recommendation is clear: use public transport, arrive well in advance and park in designated areas outside the city centre.
If your plan is to see the popemobile without accreditation, position yourself near the Stadium before 5:00 pm.
Live coverage: RTVC will broadcast all events.

Living and investing in Gran Canaria: an island with global reach
Pope Leo XIV’s visit confirms something we at Engel & Völkers Gran Canaria know well: this island has a human, cultural and spiritual dimension that goes far beyond its beaches and climate.
The Holy Father’s choice of Arguineguín as his first stop speaks volumes about the international standing of the Mogán municipality. It is precisely one of the most in-demand residential areas on the island, valued for its exceptional climate — the best in Gran Canaria — its maritime atmosphere and its strong returns on holiday rentals.
Events with worldwide projection such as this reinforce the confidence of European buyers in the local market. Demand remains solid across key areas: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria — with established neighbourhoods like Triana, Guanarteme and Las Canteras —, the Maspalomas–Meloneras corridor for those seeking luxury and strong yields, and inland municipalities like Teror and Moya for buyers who value authenticity and quality of life.
The buyer profile arriving on the island is varied: European families looking for a second home with year-round sunshine, investors focused on holiday rental returns, and people who have simply decided to live better.
If any of these profiles sounds like you, explore available properties in the south of Gran Canaria, discover the best areas to live and invest in Gran Canaria or get in touch with our Engel & Völkers Gran Canaria team directly.
