Ort: Esquilino, Rom
Porta Maggiore is one of Rome’s most evocative historic and architectural hubs, located on the border between the Esquilino district and the San Giovanni area. This imposing structure was created in 52 AD under Emperor Claudius not as a gate, but as a monumental double travertine arch designed to allow the Aqua Claudia and Anio Novus aqueducts to cross over the ancient Via Prenestina and Via Labicana (today’s Via Casilina). Its architecture is renowned for its rustic style and for the three large inscriptions on the attic celebrating Claudius’ work and the subsequent restorations by Vespasian and Titus. In the 3rd century, the monumental arch was turned into an actual city gate when Emperor Aurelian incorporated it into the city’s defensive walls. Right next to the gate stands the unusual Tomb of Marcus Vergilius Eurysaces, a baker from the Republican period who chose to decorate his tomb with explicit references to bread-making, bearing witness to the area’s ancient productive vocation. Today, the area around Porta Maggiore and San Giovanni blends this millennia-old heritage with a dynamic, industrial urban character. The neighborhood is known for major industrial-archaeology projects, such as the conversion of the former Pantanella Pasta Factory into modern designer residential complexes, distinguished by large glass façades offering unique views of the Aurelian Walls. Strategically connected by Metro lines A and C and numerous trams, the area is a meeting point between imperial history and the vibrancy of contemporary Rome
