Location: Vignale Monferrato, Piedmont
Vignale Monferrato, in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage areas, is a small village rich in history. A garrison of Roman soldiers who controlled the road from Alessandria to Asti, only in the Middle Ages did the village of Vignale gain real substance around the castle of the Aleramic Marquises, and the name Vinealis, owing to its important wine production. In 1703 the town, together with all of Monferrato, entered the domains of the House of Savoy and followed its history until the unification of Italy. Worth admiring is Palazzo Callori, an imposing building constructed according to the canons of 18th-century patrician residences by the Callori, one of the ancient noble families of Asti. In the lower part of Vignale, near Porta Urbica, stands the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows with the adjoining convent of the Servants of Mary. The town is close to the main motorway routes and to the municipalities of Casale Monferrato and Alessandria. Nearby is also the prestigious Golf Margara, which, with its two 18-hole championship courses, ranks among the top venues on the Piedmont golf circuits.
