Location: Via Tassis, Bergamo

The Upper Town is the ancient village of Bergamo and Piazza Vecchia is its heart; "one of the most fascinating squares in the world," as Le Corbusier wrote after seeing it at sunset. It is a Renaissance space with a fountain from 1780 at its center. On the sides, it encloses historical buildings like the Palazzo del Podestà, the Palazzo della Ragione, which dates back to the 12th century but was reconstructed in the 15th-16th century with the Lion of Saint Mark, a testament to the dominion of the Serenissima. Above all stands the imposing Medieval Tower of the Town Hall, which still today, at 10 p.m., rings its 100 chimes, in memory of when the city gates were closed. Moving to the back side of the square, one finds the Colleoni Chapel, the Romanesque Cathedral with Baroque interiors, and the austere Romanesque Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. All the streets have preserved their medieval flavor with buildings and arched portals, once home to ancient artisan shops. Beyond the Palazzo della Biblioteca Civica, one of the richest in Italy, a visit to the Teatro Sociale, designed by Pollack in 1803, is recommended. The street continues among shops of various kinds where gastronomic specialties abound. The walk continues to the 16th-century Piazza Mascheroni. Passing through the portico of the Torre della Campanella, you enter Piazza della Cittadella, where the Civic Archaeological Museum and the Natural Science Museum are located. Arriving at Colle Aperto, the most panoramic point of the city, begins the road that runs along Via Torni and Via Borgo Canale, with views over the hills and the lower city.
