Considered the most romantic in Italy, Lake Orta is a pre-Alpine lake just a few kilometers from Lake Maggiore and only an hour's drive from Milan and Turin. It has long been a favored destination for renowned chefs who have opened famous restaurants here, and entrepreneurs who have created resorts and accommodations of rare beauty. At its center stands the Island of San Giulio, the symbol of the region, beautiful and unique in its kind, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Among the most characteristic towns, besides Ameno and Miasino with the enchanting Villa Nigra, Orta undoubtedly stands out, with the Sacred Mountain, its historic center full of cobblestone streets, the central square where boats depart for the Island of San Giulio, and the panoramic walk among the sumptuous villas. On the opposite shore, we find Pella: a delightful town also accessible via a walk starting from the Lido di Gozzano. Not far away is the Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso, situated on a rocky spur overlooking the Lake. From here, the view spans an exciting breathtaking panorama of slopes and green peaks reflected in the water. Continuing north, you'll first find Oira, certainly worth a visit, and then Omegna, one of the largest towns, where the Strona stream curiously flows in reverse. The waters of Lake Orta are clear and swimmable, and many sports are practiced: from swimming to sailing, canoeing to diving. Surrounded by green mountains, there are many trails for walking in nature, even reaching the summit of Mount Mottarone, above Stresa. It is also not far from the Val d'Ossola, a destination for those who love trips to the high mountains both in the summer and winter.
