Orvieto is a charming town perched on a volcanic tuff plateau. This natural fortress was already inhabited in Etruscan times. The town, which probably grew up on the site of the ancient Etruscan city of Volsinii, is famous for its rich history, medieval atmosphere, and cultural treasures. The most impressive building is the magnificent Gothic Duomo di Orvieto, which was built after the “Miracle of Bolsena” in the 13th century and is famous for its splendid façade. Beneath the city lies a fascinating system of underground tunnels consisting of over a thousand caves and galleries, dug since Etruscan times, which can be visited today. Other attractions include the Pozzo di San Patrizio (St. Patrick's Well), 62 meters deep, and the Torre del Moro (Moor's Tower), which offers a panoramic view of the city and the Umbrian countryside. Orvieto is also the capital of the “Città Slow” (Slow City) movement and is famous for its white wine, Orvieto Classico. The city is easily accessible via the A1 motorway (Orvieto exit, 10 minutes from the center) and a funicular connects the train station to the historic center at the top of the rock. The gallery is located a few steps from Piazza della Repubblica, the lively Corso Cavour, and the central square with the Duomo. The airports of Rome and Florence are 1.5 and 2 hours away by car, respectively.
