Viggiù is a municipality in the northeast of the province of Varese, specifically in Valceresio, at the foot of Monte Orsa, with about 5,300 inhabitants. Its history dates back to ancient times, as evidenced by Roman-era artifacts. Viggiù boasts numerous treasures. Among them is the historic center, unique in its kind, characterized by typical courtyard houses with entrances adorned by artistic stone portals, where stonecutters' workshops were located. The famous "Pietra di Viggiù" was one of the many stones extracted from the surrounding hills; it was used as building and decorative material, and in the past, this made the area a place of great artistic importance. This characteristic has made Viggiù known as the village of "Picasass," because in the past, passing through the streets, one could hear only the clinking of hammers striking the stone. Numerous churches are also enriched by works of local artists. In the heart of the village, in a charming green setting, we find Villa Borromeo, an elegant late neoclassical building, an ideal destination for daily excursions.
