The Municipality of Mombarcaro is located in the southeastern part of the Province of Cuneo, near the administrative border with the Liguria Region. Strategically situated on the hilltop ridge of the Alta Langa at an altitude of 896 metres above sea level, the settlement holds the territory’s altitude record and has historically been known as the “Summit of the Langhe.” This geographical position provides extensive panoramic views over the entire Belbo River valley. Etymologically, the name “Mombarcaro” derives from the Latin phrase Mons Barbarus or, according to local historiographical tradition, from the expression “Mountain of Boats.” The latter designation is scientifically supported by the site’s distinctive climatic and visual conditions: when atmospheric clarity is optimal, the elevated panoramic viewpoint allows the Ligurian Sea and maritime traffic in front of the port of Savona to be observed. The municipal territory, predominantly comprising woodland, hazelnut orchards and mountain pastures, borders the municipalities of Murazzano, Niella Belbo, San Benedetto Belbo, Gorzegno, Prunetto, Monesiglio (along the Bormida Valley route), Camerana and Sale San Giovanni.
