    Location: Treiso, Piedmont

Treiso is located just 8 km from the center of Alba, connected by a road that winds through vineyards planted with Nebbiolo, Barbaresco, and Dolcetto. Thanks to its altitude of 410 meters, Treiso offers a natural viewpoint over the surrounding area: from here, the gaze sweeps across the Alba plain and the gentle profiles of the Bassa Langa, eventually losing itself in the ridges of the Maritime Alps mountain range. The municipality of Treiso (735 inhabitants) was established in 1957, separating from Barbaresco, of which it was a fraction. The novel by Beppe Fenoglio, A Private Matter, is set in this municipality and the nearby one of Alba. Treiso's history is rooted in ancient Rome, when the stone marking the third mile of the Magistra Langarum road, which connected Alba Pompeia to Provence, was located here. Today, evidence of this small village in the Langhe's past can be found in ancient buildings like the Parish Church of the Blessed Virgin Assumed, in Baroque style. However, it is the recent history that has particularly marked the face of Treiso: its territory was the scene of partisan struggles during World War II, as narrated by Beppe Fenoglio in his masterpiece, The Partisan Johnny. The chapels-pilons are dedicated to the fallen of the Resistance. In Treiso, one not only breathes history but also legend. Not far from the town center lies a large karst chasm, the Rocche dei Sette Fratelli. According to popular tales, it was here that seven brothers once railed against their sister who brought them a meager breakfast and against God who, to punish them, opened an abyss that swallowed them immediately.
