Arona, an important historic and tourist center, lies on the Piedmont shore of Lake Maggiore, also known as the Versace Coast. A town with a rich history, it was for a long time in the hands of the wealthy and powerful Borromeo family: Saint Charles Borromeo was in fact born here, in the castle, in 1538. The most important and fascinating monument is undoubtedly the colossus of St. Charles Borromeo which, at about 35 meters tall, ranks second among the world’s tallest statues that can be visited from the inside, surpassed only by the Statue of Liberty. Arona offers tourists a variety of activities: a historic center full of shops and restaurants, a pleasant lakeside promenade for walks, and lidos and small beaches where you can spend warm summer days. It is about 80 km from Milan, making it easily reachable by car or train. The town is well connected to the Milan metropolitan area via the A8 motorway and the railway, allowing arrival in about 1 hour. It is also only about 20 km from Milan Malpensa International Airport. Proximity to Malpensa makes the town a strategic starting point for domestic and international travel. Access to the airport is facilitated by the SS336 expressway, which makes it possible to reach the airport in under 30 minutes. Arona is also an excellent base for exploring Ticino Canton in Switzerland, about 40 km to the northwest. Thanks to its location, the town is easily reachable from Lugano, Bellinzona and other Swiss destinations in Ticino. For golf lovers it is also very close to the two prestigious courses of Castelconturbia (about 10 km) and Bogogno (about 15 km). Both are considered among the best in Italy. Finally, the Alps and the ski resorts of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola can be reached in under an hour.
