The city of Varese lies on the shores of the lake of the same name. It is called the Garden City thanks to the many splendid private and public gardens within the municipality. Varese is in a distinctive position, at the foot of the Sacro Monte di Varese, part of the Campo dei Fiori Massif and home to an astronomical observatory. Varese rests on seven hills: Colle di San Pedrino (402 m), Colle di Giubiano (407 m), Colle Campigli (453 m), Colle di Sant'Albino (406 m), Colle di Biumo Superiore (439 m), Colle di Montalbano (411 m) and Colle dei Miogni (492 m). The municipal area therefore ranges between 238 and 1,150 metres above sea level. Varese winters are only slightly affected by the moderating influence of Lake Maggiore and the other smaller lakes in the province. Late-autumn and winter minimum temperatures frequently fall, even if only by a few degrees, below freezing. It is precisely the low night-time temperatures that create a climate different from areas south of the city. As in other Lombard pre-Alpine cities, fog is an infrequent phenomenon. Since 1960, it has hosted the only Italian campus of the European School, created for the children of European officials of the Joint Research Centre. Milan Malpensa and Lugano-Agno airports are about 30 minutes away. The shores of Lake Maggiore can be reached in 20 minutes by car.
