The city of Varese lies on the shores of the lake of the same name. It is called the Garden City thanks to the many splendid private and public gardens within the municipality. Varese is in a distinctive position, at the foot of the Sacro Monte di Varese, part of the Campo dei Fiori Massif and home to an astronomical observatory. Varese rests on seven hills: Colle di San Pedrino (402 m), Colle di Giubiano (407 m), Colle Campigli (453 m), Colle di Sant'Albino (406 m), Colle di Biumo Superiore (439 m), Colle di Montalbano (411 m) and Colle dei Miogni (492 m). Varese winters are only slightly affected by the moderating influence of Lake Maggiore and the other smaller lakes in the province.
