The municipality of Lacchiarella is located south of Milan in the lower Po Valley. The Roman road that connected Mediolanum with Ticinum (Pavia) passed through Cascina Decima, the modern Lombard court of Lacchiarella. Its name derives from Ad Decimum, which recalls its distance in miles from Mediolanum. The town, which certainly has Roman origins, arose and developed following the reclamation of the plain. From the year 400 AD Lacchiarella suffered disastrous barbarian invasions: from the Huns to the Goths and from the Lombards to the Franks and the Hungarians who, in 898, sacked and destroyed it with raids of all kinds. Following the repetition of these raids, the Milanese erected the castle of Lacchiarella with the fortress, the towers and the moat and maintained its garrison until 1275; Subsequently, to reduce unsustainable costs, many castles had to be dismantled and this fate also befell the castle of Lacchiarella.
