Rocca delle Donne, a small hamlet of Camino Monferrato, owes its name to the Monastery that the Marquis William of Monferrato, known as the Elder, founded here in 1167. The date is not certain because most probably the Convent was pre-existing and Guglielmo merely enlarged and enriched it. More than a Convent, Rocca delle Donne, within a short time, took on the appearance and, above all, the customs of a feudal court, a meeting point for knights and intellectuals of the time, who often did not limit themselves to fleeting visits, but to long and regenerating stays within the welcoming walls of the building. Today, the ancient medieval structures survive, incorporated into the building that was re-modelled between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries into the form of a large wine farm. Strategically located, Rocca delle Donne is just a few minutes' drive from the motorway exits of Casale Monferrato and Vercelli and about an hour from Milan, Turin and Genoa. Its location on the ridge of the first hill of Monferrato allows views of the green hills to the south and the Vercelli plain with the Alps in the foreground to the north.
