Portico view steps away from the Observatory

The area of the Specola in Padua is one of the most fascinating places in the city, where the scientific past blends with a tranquil and evocative landscape. The Specola, an ancient astronomical tower of the University built in the eighteenth century from the Torre del Castel Vecchio, rises above the Bacchiglione River and dominates a particularly picturesque stretch of the watercourse. The area, although close to the center, is quiet and immersed in greenery. From the Ponte del Castelvecchio, one can enjoy very characteristic views, with the reflections of the tower mirrored in the river. Around the Specola, elements of medieval fortifications and the system of canals that once defended and supplied the city can be recognized. Besides its scenic value, the tower retains a strong historical imprint: it was one of the main European astronomical observatories between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and today it tells the Padua scientific tradition through museum spaces and original environments.
