Location: Morciano di Leuca, Apulia
Living in Morciano di Leuca is simple and healthy. It is like being part of a widespread community made up of neighborhoods, interspersed with large gardens cultivated as vegetable plots. Its area, combined with that of the neighboring municipalities of Salve, Patù, Castrignano del Capo, and Alessano, is equal to the area of the municipality of Ugento alone. The population of Morciano is just over three thousand inhabitants, and together with its neighboring towns it reaches twenty thousand. These figures are objectively modest. Yet this area concentrates charm, attractions, and all the rural character of Mediterranean Italy. Not surprisingly, there is an association of municipalities known as the Union of the Municipalities of Capo di Leuca, which promotes cultural and administrative aspects of common interest. The municipality of Morciano alone includes two hamlets: Barbarano and Torre Vado. Despite its small size, Barbarano conveys all the flavor of rural and ancient life. The Capece Tower rises at its center, while ancient courtyards and historic houses surround it in a welcoming embrace. Life here is simple, free from the demands of modernity, and residents can see the wonder and happiness in the eyes of travelers and foreigners who have chosen to live in these places. Torre Vado enjoys a little more nightlife during the summer months—just enough to maintain a connection with the rest of the world. Its character, however, remains that of a fishing village, where visitors can take a boat trip to the caves of Santa Maria di Leuca or stroll along the renovated panoramic seafront and the small harbor area, dominated by the tower that gives the locality its name. Together with the nearby seaside areas of Posto Vecchio (Salve) and Felloniche (Patù), it forms a single south-facing coastline with incomparable waters and winter temperatures that almost never fall below 15°C.
