A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, Pisa preserves its centuries of history in the palaces and visible remains scattered throughout various corners of the city. Not only treasure like the Tower and the incredible Piazza dei Miracoli, but one of the testimonies of its glorious past is the 12th-century city wall that still encloses what is considered the historic center of the city, with its four main districts divided by the Arno River. Many literati and scientists over the years have praised the Lungarno in Pisa, and today its banks are named after them, where some of the most illustrious palaces, once home to the most prestigious families, stand. Pisa boasts a past of maritime power: in addition to being an important Roman port, it was one of the four Maritime Republics, whose trade brought considerable wealth to the city. But it is especially science that has made the city a thriving hub of attraction: the birthplace of Galileo Galilei, it hosts the prestigious Sant'Anna and Normale Schools, as well as a rich university. The nerve center of city life is Borgo, between the districts of Santa Maria and San Francesco, one of the main streets characterized by a portico overlooking elegant palaces dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries, enlivened by stylish venues and shops. Dynamism and entertainment are ensured by festivals and events that throughout the year fill Pisa's main cultural centers, with a special mention to the Luminara di San Ranieri, a unique light show that illuminates the river every June 16th in celebration of the patron saint. Just a few kilometers from the center is the San Rossore Park, once the summer residence of the President of the Republic and today a protected natural reserve. The city also boasts an exceptional location with its proximity to the Apuan Alps 50 km away and the Monti Pisani adjacent to the center, a great setting for trekking and mountain biking. Just 15 km away, you can reach the coast with its beaches and equipped shores to experience a typical Italian summer. Here is also the tourist port of Pisa, from where you can set off for short sailing trips to the islands of the Tuscan archipelago. The port of Livorno, on the other hand, is only 25 km away and allows access to Corsica, Sardinia, and other European destinations. The city also has an airport, one of the main ones in Tuscany with national and international routes. Finally noteworthy is the railway, whose connections allow you to reach all other cities on the peninsula. In 30 minutes by car, you can discover Lucca and the culinary traditions of the hinterland, while the wonders of Florence are reachable in just one hour. Traveling 35 km instead, you reach Forte dei Marmi and Versilia.
