Location: Besozzo, Lombardy

Besozzo is a town of about 9000 inhabitants already known in Roman times and with buildings inhabited since the Middle Ages. Besozzo offers all the services necessary to live in a unique atmosphere in addition to the railway station with its line connected to both Malpensa and Luino and then to Switzerland. A short distance away is the town of Laveno, a very important tourist centre. Laveno embraces many landscapes: we are in northern Italy but the climate is Mediterranean and the panorama ranges from the water to mountain peaks. Especially important is the tourist port that, by means of the ferry service, puts the town in contact with Intra, on the Piedmont shore, and from which it is possible to visit the Borromeo Islands and other beauties of the lake. Above the town rises Mount Sasso del Ferro, one of the most popular vantage points on Lake Maggiore, also for hang-gliding and paragliding enthusiasts. For tourism, Laveno Mombello is one of the most easily reachable destinations on the lake and well connected to the major centres in Lombardy: the Ferrovie Nord (Northern Railway), which connects it with Varese and then with Milan, arrives just a few metres from the lake, very close to the centre; the Ferrovie dello Stato (State Railway) connects it to Switzerland; the Autostrada dei Laghi (Lakes Motorway) is easily reached both via the Besozzo-Vergiate highway at Sesto Calende and across the lake, towards Gravellona Toce. The centre now offers tourists a remarkable lakeside promenade with arcaded buildings and pedestrian paths. The town also offers several shopping opportunities. It was also an important centre for the production of ceramics and porcelain. The historical centre houses the beautiful Villa De Angeli Frua, which is also worth visiting for its renowned botanical park. Not far from Laveno we also find the Hermitage of S. Caterina del Sasso: a jewel set in the rock overlooking the waters of Lake Maggiore.
