Declared one of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy, Monte Isola covers a total area of 12.8 sq km, with a circumference of about 9 km and an altitude reaching 600 meters.

It has twelve typical villages, some on the hills and others by the lake, characterized by narrow streets and alleys that reflect the fundamental role these played in the island’s economy, which has always been based on wooden boat building, net production, and fishing.

The island is well connected to the mainland thanks to ferries that quickly reach its romantic villages; Sulzano, Sale Marasino, Lovere, Iseo, and Sarnico are just a few minutes away by boat.

The entire island is best explored on foot, by bicycle, or using the small buses that provide public transport service (the island is car-free). The island’s profile is defined by the Rocca Martinengo and the Sanctuary of Madonna della Ceriola.

The Rocca, visible halfway up the hill above Sensole, was built in the 14th century by the Oldofredi family; its tower is unusually placed in the center of the castle, which is surrounded by a moat. Despite its military appearance, the building was transformed into a residence in the 15th century by the Martinengo family.

At the summit stands the white Sanctuary of Madonna della Ceriola, built in very ancient times on the remains of a pagan building, offering a breathtaking panoramic view.

The island’s main town, Siviano, retains medieval traces in its stone walls, narrow alleys, and the Martinengo tower. Peschiera Maraglio is the most easily accessible village and offers lakeside restaurants, services, and shops. The small village of Carzano preserves its water-related traditions. Every five years, it hosts the Festival of the Holy Cross, during which it and the historic center of Novale are entirely decorated with thousands of paper flowers.
