Porto Salvo originally consisted of a small settlement at the junction of the roads from Oeiras and Paço de Arcos, extending no farther than the site where its church now stands. Its existence is recorded in the Middle Ages (1362), dominated by agricultural, livestock, and extractive activities, and it was then the second most important locality in the parish of Oeiras.
