Location: Paço de Arcos, Oeiras
Paço de Arcos or Paço d'Arcos is a locality in the civil parish of Oeiras and São Julião da Barra, Paço de Arcos and Caxias, in the municipality of Oeiras. On the Lisbon Coast, next to the most Atlantic beaches of the Tagus Estuary, the pleasant riverside atmosphere of the town’s picturesque streets has made them especially attractive for restaurants, hospitality and commerce. Created on 16 January 2013. Resulting from the extinction of the civil parish of the same name, the town of Paço de Arcos is nicknamed by its inhabitants as “the most charming town in Portugal”.
The place name derives from the Palácio dos Arcos, the town’s most important building, which the people called a “Paço” (royal palace) because King Manuel I, “the Fortunate”, and his daughter Maria are said to have stayed there several times, to take part in hunts on the entailed estate and to watch the departure of the caravels bound for India.
