Location: Porto Salvo, Lisbon

Porto Salvo originally consisted of a small settlement at the junction of the Oeiras and Paço de Arcos roads, extending no farther than the site of its present-day church. Its existence is recorded in the Middle Ages (1362), when it was dominated by agriculture, livestock farming and extractive activities, making it the second most important locality in the Oeiras royal estate. Its growth was due to the construction of a chapel on the hill or knoll of Caspolima (1530), dedicated to Our Lady of Porto Salvo. Her fervent worship eventually led to the settlement’s current name, replacing the hereditary place name Caspolima, which fell into disuse from the 18th century onward.
