Location: Campolide, Lisbon
Campolide was once fertile farmland, home to several estates. Olive groves, orchards and vineyards covered the entire hillside. Today, these hills “hide” a quiet, safe neighborhood, with houses mostly dating from the 1970s. Almost the entire area consists of apartment buildings, but there is a particularly interesting section (the Calçada dos Mestres neighborhood), overlooking the Águas Livres Aqueduct, where we find semi-detached houses with backyards. Young people, older residents and families live here. There is the daily movement of those who leave in the morning and return at night, as well as people who spend their days here: making a quick trip to the local grocery store or heading to Amoreiras for a different kind of shopping. Most businesses are concentrated in this center, which was the city’s largest some years ago. Although it is a quiet neighborhood, all the traffic from the city center passes through here, heading either south or toward the Cascais railway line (and vice versa in the morning). Anyone taking this route will encounter the Águas Livres Aqueduct, an emblematic and monumental 18th-century Lisbon landmark—a complex system for collecting and distributing water throughout the city. A must-see for anyone unfamiliar with it. The presence of NOVA University Lisbon is also important, attracting young people to the area and consequently helping to develop local commerce and services.
