Portimão, the largest city in the Western Algarve with around 60,000 residents, was once a hub of boat building, sardine fishing and fish processing. Today, the city has maintained its historic and residential character, and developed new avenues for tourism, leisure and retail. The old fishing docks have been transformed into a riverside promenade connecting to vintage cobbled streets, with plenty of cafés and restaurants to enjoy excellent Portuguese gastronomy. Life is lived outdoors whenever possible, to enjoy the views and the typically good weather. Portimão’s culture is low-key and relaxed, and distinct from the pulse of the nearby Praia da Rocha, just seven minutes from the city center. Praia da Rocha’s vast beach, crystal clear water and majestic cliffs attract thousands of tourists every year. Restaurants, beach bars and nightlife complement its picture postcard views. At a short distance you can also visit the fishing villages of Alvor, Ferragudo and Carvoeiro, the spas of Monchique, Lagos (the city of the discoveries) and Sagres (the westernmost point of Europe). Faro airport is only 45 minutes away. Lisbon and Seville are roughly the same distance from Portimão (2H30).
