Tavira: Location and surroundings of this property

This property is located near Tavira old town. Tavira is a former Roman seaport once occupied by the Moors, in the East Algarve. Like many towns in the southern region of Portugal, this city was basically destroyed in the Great Earthquake of 1755, so many of its lovely buildings were constructed in the 18th century. Tavira is a very calm city and an excellent place to retire. Situated on the Gilão River, the town invites visitors to experience a warren of cobblestone streets, traditional, white-washed houses, and dozens of churches, many with exquisite azulejos, the classic ornamental blue and white tiles so prominent in Portugal. To the south of the city are the protected waterways, mudflats, bird sanctuaries, and salt pans of the Natural Park of Ria Formosa. Tavira offers a wide variety of amenities and services such as restaurants, cafes, bakeries, schools, pharmacies, supermarkets, and private health services. It is a short boat ride away from the fantastic Tavira island, Terra Estreita Beach, Cabanas, or Barril Beach.
