Sustainable Architecture 4-Bed Home near the Paiva Walkways with Stunning Views

Four-bedroom house set in an exceptional natural setting, next to the Paiva Walkways, where the mountainous landscape of northern Portugal blends with a peaceful, sustainable lifestyle deeply connected to nature. This project stems from the rehabilitation of an old schist building of around 30 years, originally constructed in a traditional manner, presenting challenges in terms of thermal comfort, ventilation, and spatial organization, but also enormous potential for transformation. The intervention brought the building back to life, preserving its identity and reinterpreting it through a contemporary and sustainable approach. The house offers 277 m² of interior built area, carefully reorganized to maximize the relationship between the spaces and the surrounding landscape. On the ground floor lies the main social area of the home, comprising a spacious living room of 53 m², directly connected to the 17 m² kitchen. The kitchen opens onto a 13 m² balcony, allowing a smooth transition between indoors and outdoors. Also on this level is a generous lounge area of about 35 m², incorporating an indoor water feature, creating an atmosphere of contemplation and well-being, with direct access from both the living room and the kitchen. The first floor is dedicated to the private area, with two bedrooms with built-in wardrobes and a full supporting bathroom. This level also benefits from an outdoor deck that allows full enjoyment of the stunning views over the natural surroundings. On the second floor are the remaining two bedrooms, also served by a full bathroom, ensuring comfort and functionality throughout the private area. Outside, the standout feature is the outdoor swimming pool, perfectly integrated into the surrounding landscape and ideal for moments of leisure and contemplation in total privacy. The refurbishment was guided by principles of energy efficiency and environmental integration, using natural, locally sourced materials such as wood, schist, lime, and stone. In the kitchen, highlights include custom engineered-wood cabinetry made by local carpenters, flooring in small schist slabs laid in a herringbone pattern, a backsplash of handcrafted green-toned tiles, and a black schist stone countertop. In the living room, the flooring in large schist slabs enhances the authenticity of the space, complemented by steel elements, including the stair opening and the wood-burning stove, as well as handcrafted joinery. Whitewashed schist walls add brightness and texture to the environment. In the bathrooms, finishes include handmade tiles, artisanal carpentry, and limestone details on the washbasins, reinforcing the unique character and connection to local materials. The new spatial organization establishes a strong connection between interior and exterior, enhancing natural light, cross ventilation, and integration with the landscape. Energy- and water-efficiency systems were also incorporated, including solar panels, underfloor heating for heating and cooling, a heat pump for domestic hot water, and a rainwater harvesting system. The house is ready to move into and offers exceptional potential, whether as a rural tourism project, a holiday home, or a permanent residence for those seeking a more autonomous lifestyle in harmony with nature, including solutions geared toward off-grid living.
