The southernmost point of Europe

Cabo de São Vicente, or the Cape of Saint Vincent, marks the most southwesterly point of Europe. Historically, this remarkable location was considered the edge of the known world until the 14th century. The towering cliffs rise 60 metres above the Atlantic Ocean, offering breathtaking views of the sea and the surrounding coastline. Guarding this wild landscape is one of Europe's brightest lighthouses, visible up to 60 miles away, a beacon for ships navigating the busy shipping routes.

A historic base of exploration

In the 15th century, the famous Portuguese explorer Henry the Navigator, often regarded as the father of Portugal's Golden Age of Discovery, made this area his base of operations. From here, he meticulously planned voyages that would explore and map the uncharted regions of western Africa. His influence and efforts in exploration played a significant role in the expansion of Portugal’s maritime empire.

A must-see destination

Located just 6 km west of Sagres and 40 km from Lagos, Cabo de São Vicente is easily accessible by car. From Sagres, it’s only a short 10-minute drive, while from Lagos, it takes around 40 minutes to reach the Cape. This proximity to both towns makes it a must-see destination for visitors in the Algarve. The spot offers an awe-inspiring vista, especially during sunset. As the sun dips into the sea, the scene is so striking that one can almost hear the hissing sound as the sun meets the ocean, a truly unforgettable experience for anyone lucky enough to witness it.
