Andritz, located in the north of Graz, is a district rich in history and charm. It comprises the former villages of Oberandritz, Unterandritz, and St. Veit, as well as the settlement of Neustift. Covering 18.47 km², Andritz is home to 19,405 residents, resulting in a population density of 1,051 inhabitants per km².
Affectionately known as the "city within the city," Andritz is Graz’s largest district by area, stretching along the River Mur and sharing a border with Gösting. To the north, its boundary extends into the southern part of the Grazer Bergland, with the Lineckberg marking the highest elevation on the left bank of the Mur within city limits. The Andritzbach stream meanders through the district, eventually merging with the Mur, adding to the natural beauty of the area.
With its diverse character and high quality of life, Andritz is one of Graz’s most sought-after residential areas. The Andritz main square serves as the district’s vibrant center and a key public transport hub. From modern condominiums to prestigious villas with stunning city views, Andritz offers a wide range of real estate options. Additionally, the abundance of green spaces, leisure activities, and recreational areas further enhances its appeal, making it a perfect blend of urban convenience and natural tranquility.

Historical Andritz
The area around Andritz has a rich history, dating back to Roman times. Evidence of early settlement includes a late Roman cemetery discovered in Weinzödl. The district was first documented in 1265 under the name Endritz, derived from the Slavic word jenderica, meaning "fast-flowing water" – a nod to the nearby Andritzbach stream.
In 1850, Andritz became an independent municipality, incorporating St. Veit and the southern part of Weinitzen. Following its incorporation into Graz, it was initially renamed Graz Nord. However, in 1946, a municipal council resolution redefined the district boundaries and restored the name Andritz, which remains today.
What were once traditional farming villages saw significant transformation in the late 19th century when Josef Korösi established an iron foundry and machine factory in the area. Industrial growth continued with the founding of the Kranz paper factory in 1913, turning Andritz into a key industrial hub. This economic evolution led to the rise of Andritz AG, now one of the world’s leading technology and engineering companies, further cementing the district’s importance in Graz’s industrial landscape.
Leisure activities and local recreation areas
A beloved local recreation area, especially in summer, is Reinerkogel. The ascent begins just a short walk from the Robert-Stolz-Gasse stop on streetcar lines 3 or 5. From there, follow the "Weg zum Reinerkogel" until you reach a sign marking the Jakobsleiter – a staircase with nearly 300 steps leading to the 500-meter-high summit. At the top, you'll find a peaceful resting spot in the middle of the forest, perfect for enjoying a snack while taking in the tranquil surroundings.
During the warmer months, Stukitzbad is a favorite among Andritz residents. This outdoor pool, complete with a sauna area, offers the perfect way to cool off and unwind. Sports enthusiasts, meanwhile, can enjoy a round of golf at the Andritz Golf Center, home to a 9-hole course that faithfully recreates some of the most famous and challenging holes from around the world. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced golfer, it’s an excellent place to practice and relax after a busy day.
The farmers' market on Andritzer Reichsstraße, held twice a week near Andritz’s main square, is a popular spot for fresh, regional products. Around the main square, a variety of stores – including the Sorger bakery, DM drugstore, and Kollar-Göbl Andritz butcher’s shop – offer everything from daily essentials to gourmet specialties. Culinary delights await at restaurants like Don Camillo and Kyabia (Japanese cuisine), catering to diverse tastes.
For special occasions, Aiola im Schloss provides an unforgettable setting for weddings, celebrations, and excursions. Beyond hosting elegant events, the venue offers a range of experiences throughout the year, including concerts, cooking courses, and exclusive barbecue evenings – ensuring there’s always something to enjoy in Andritz!

Cycle Paths
Cyclists benefit from a well-developed network of routes that traverse Andritz and extend beyond the district. The Murradweg R2 follows the Mur River, crossing the Kalvarienbrücke bridge toward Gratkorn. Meanwhile, at Körösistraße, riders can connect to the R28 main cycle route, which leads directly to Stattegg. These paths offer scenic and practical commuting options for both leisure and daily travel.

For motorists, Andritz provides quick access to the A9 Pyhrn Autobahn, making travel to other regions swift and convenient. Parking is available in blue and green zones, with designated spaces for both visitors and residents.
Education
In addition to its kindergartens, a new secondary school, and a regular elementary school, Andritz is also home to the Regenbogenhaus. This unique educational institution includes a private kindergarten and a private school with public rights.
