Living in the 16th district of Straßgang

Straßgang: the 16th district on the upswing

Elegant white bedroom featuring tall windows with sheer curtains, a crystal chandelier, and white bedding. The room includes antique wooden furniture, palm plants, and herringbone wooden flooring, all bathed in natural light creating an airy, sophisticated atmosphere.

Straßgang is a district rich in history, with its roots dating back to Roman times when a major trade route ran along the old Poststraße. Even today, historical landmarks remain, such as the burial mound at Bründlteich. Additional archaeological finds from the Norse and Slavic periods further highlight the area's long and diverse history. The district’s name originates from the Slavic word straza, meaning "watchpoint."

In 1938, Straßgang, along with Puntigam, was incorporated as the 16th district of Graz. However, in 1988, Puntigam became an independent district. Today, Straßgang is home to approximately 14,150 residents across an area of 11.75 km².

Location: a village idyll

As a south-western district, Straßgang is nestled at the foot of the Floriani Mountain, adjacent to the Buchkogel Nature Reserve. This reserve, which separates Graz from Hitzendorf, serves as a beautiful local recreation area. The Kehlberg, with its impressive St. Martin Castle perched atop, offers not only stunning views but also easy access to a wide range of sporting activities. Additionally, the area is home to one of Graz’s two wine-growing regions, which has been partially revitalized since around 2010.

St. Martin Castle now serves as an educational center and event venue for the province of Styria.

Straßgang is also well-equipped for families, with a kindergarten, elementary school, and secondary school located in the district center.

Local recreation areas and leisure activities

A fantastic leisure spot for all ages is Bad Straßgang, the only natural swimming pool in Graz. Spanning over 11,000 m², it is one of the largest pools in the city. The pool offers a variety of amenities, including areas for beginners and non-swimmers, a running track, table tennis tables, trampolines, and a soccer pitch. For younger children, there is a paddling pool and a dedicated play area. The admission fees are very affordable—€5 for adults and just €2.50 for children and young people aged 6 to 18. Bad Straßgang can be easily reached by bus lines 32 and 62 via the Bad Straßgang stop.

Another local treat is the ice cream parlor on Straßganger Straße. This charming shop serves not only organic and locally produced ice cream but also a variety of delicious waffles, pancakes, smoothies, and milkshakes. The ice cream is made fresh daily on-site, and with over 100 flavors to choose from, there's something to satisfy every sweet tooth.

Straßgang also offers other great sights:

  • Ruperti Church

  • St. Martin's Castle

  • Church of Maria im Elend in Straßgang

  • Church of St. Florian
