Location: Massino Visconti, Piedmont
This small town is situated on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore, nestled in the hills and overlooking the lake’s lush shores. Peace and nature are the hallmarks of the town of Massino Visconti (above Lesa), located just a few kilometers from the renowned city of Arona. An important tourist destination, well-connected to major highways, close to Malpensa, and 60 km from Milan, Arona lies on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore. A town with a rich history, Arona was long ruled by the wealthy and powerful Borromeo family: in fact, St. Charles Borromeo was born here, in the castle, in 1538. The town is home to numerous churches and squares, among which the Church of the Holy Martyrs and the Collegiate Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary are certainly worth mentioning. Moving on to the medieval heart of the town, we discover Piazza del Popolo, with its old-world houses and the pier, where a small lighthouse stands—a favorite spot among tourists. However, Arona’s most important and fascinating monument is undoubtedly the colossal statue of St. Charles Borromeo, which, at a height of about 35 meters, ranks second among the world’s tallest statues, surpassed only by the Statue of Liberty. Arona also offers a variety of activities for tourists: a historic center brimming with shops and restaurants, a beautiful lakeside promenade perfect for strolling, and beaches and small coves where you can enjoy the warm summer days.
