All about Toledo

The beautiful and ancient city of Toledo (UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986), situated at the top of a hill and surrounded by the waters of the Tagus River, is located only about 70 km away from Madrid. This historic town is the capital of the province with the same name and is part of the autonomous community of Castilla - La Mancha. With a population estimated at nearly 90,000 inhabitants, there are numerous roads, a fast railway line and motorway connections with the city of Madrid, Toledo has an interesting economic activity centred around the metal industry and the service sector. Toledo certainly stands out above the rest because it is a city with an irresistible tourist appeal, whose most representative icon in the eyes of the world is, undoubtedly, an imposing fortress located at the top of the city: the renowned and strategic Alcazar.

The impressive cultural and artistic wealth of the city, which is expressed in the mixture of unique styles and brimming with eclectic architecture of magnificent buildings; monasteries, fortresses, palaces, beautiful gardens and numerous monuments seem to have been placed for the sole reason of delighting every one of its visitors. Toledo has been populated for centuries by Jews, Christians and Muslims; for that reason, it brings together the loveliest mosques, synagogues and churches. This uniqueness has earned it the title "tri-cultural city", although it is also known as "the imperial city" since under the reign of Carlos I, the court established its headquarters within the walls of Toledo.

Spend some time in Toledo to traverse each of its ancient gateways or learn about fascinating places such as the castle of San Servando, the monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, the Palacio de Galiana, the Tránsito Synagogue, the Tornerías Mosque or the majestic Alcazar. These are the reason why many tourists stop by in this city to rent a property. Many of these historic buildings are interestingly stored inside museums; among them, the Army Museum, which is located inside Alcazar.

It is believed that these residences have received the name of cigarrales due to the fact that during the summer season, you can hear the musical sounds of the trees. The construction of cigarrales dates back to the mid 15th century, a period in which prominent members of the Spanish clergy began to settle in this area during the summer months. As time went by, the large land adjacent to the buildings were covered with fruit trees and their harvest was the livelihood of farms. At some point, the maintenance and repair of summer dwellings became extremely expensive; This situation led to the subdivision of land being made into smaller plots and, consequently, they faced commercial exploitation.

The beautiful cigarrales of Toledo, with their large terraces and dreamy gardens have panoramic views that are ideal for perpetuating your memories through photographs. The real estate agents of Toledo are well informed about the distinctive advantages of these farms for those interested in buying or renting a cigarral.
