How self-employed people can become better organised

Time management is one of the biggest problems facing the self-employed today. This is fundamentally due to the fact that, on many occasions, self-employed people are not able to separate their work, leisure and rest time from each other, hence the reason they end up having a lower quality of life. It may seem that having the freedom to manage your time is an advantage, but it can also become a serious disadvantage.

The first thing to do is set a work schedule and stick to it. For example, if your working hours are set from 8 in the morning to 6 in the afternoon, it is recommended to disconnect once the time is up. Turn off your mobile phone, stop checking your e-mails and calendar from 6pm. Refrain from replying to client's messages while eating dinner just because they have placed a last-minute order. If you don't manage your time properly, your stress levels can increase as a consequence.

It is also vital to spend a few minutes at the beginning of the day to prioritise tasks in order to determine which are the most urgent ones and which ones can be done last. A client may make an impromptu order at the last minute but, since you work alone, you have to be able to tell him/her to wait. You also have to be proactive and arrange those meetings and negotiations in advance. A structured agenda is key to time organisation for every self-employed person.

Continuing with the agenda issue, it is never too much to have some support, either digital or paper, in which those tasks that have been completed can be crossed out and give way to those that are still pending. You may at any given time find yourself in a situation where you would need to combine several work-related tasks with different projects, which can become really complicated. Therefore, it is best to seek assistance and focus on the most important tasks.

Nowadays, there are many electronic devices as well as applications that are highly practical to help you manage your time better and become perfectly organised. These appliances are widely used by real estate professionals in Madrid as well as by self-employed workers in other sectors.

Establishing a schedule, prioritising urgent tasks and dedicating the necessary time to have a rest are key elements for work organisation of any self-employer person. No doubt this is the only way to survive working on your own without going crazy over stress.
