How to keep your home safe before going away for Easter

Easter is coming to the city of Madrid and, with it, a perfect time to take a well-deserved holiday to another part of Spain or even abroad. In fact, thanks to both Holy Thursday and Good Friday holidays in Madrid, there will definitely be quite a few packing their bags. However, extreme caution must be exercised as on those particular dates, many criminals take advantage of the opportunity to plan their robberies or break into homes. So, if you do not want to be the victim of such break-ins, follow these basic recommendations before you leave.

It is important that you inform your closes neighbour whom you trust most about your departure date. This is really important since, in most cases, those living next door can raise the alarm in the event of a robbery in your home. If the complex you live in has a doorman, make sure you notify him too. No one better than a doorman will be able to keep an eye out for any intruders who may come near your property.

Also pay special attention to any mail you will be receiving through the post. Remember that thieves are experts in working out that no one is home at a particular time and piled-up mail is the most obvious sign. Therefore, if you are going to take a few extra days off and go on holiday, ask a family member or friend to pick up your letters so that criminals don't think that your property is left unprotected.

It is best that you do not close the blinds or the curtains at all before leaving for the Easter holidays. In fact, the ideal way is to have a home automotion system on a timer for opening and closing the blinds automatically at certain times of the day. However, if you do not have this system, leave the curtains half-open so it looks like there is someone living in the house. The same can be said about leaving the lights ON or hanging some clothes outside. But obviously don't leave the laundry on the clothing line if rain is in forecast.

Finally, before leaving the city of Madrid this Easter, you should also know that in order to prevent a robbery in your home, it is vital that you do not leave the keys hidden around your home (under the mat, in a pot, etc.). These are the very first places that thieves look for. They may even secretly follow you to see where you will be putting the keys, so the place that you'll be hiding the keys in may not be safe after all.

Happy Holidays!
