Justicia neighbourhood in Madrid

Justicia neighbourhood of Madrid owes its name to the Ministry of Justice Supreme Court. As this neighbourhood belongs to the district of Centro, nearby are Universidad y Sol, Palacio (palace), Embajadores, and Cortes within the heart of the capital, next to the emblematic Gran Vía and bordered by Paseo de Recoletos and Plaza de Colón.

This area retains most of its architectural buildings such as Longoria Palace in Fernando VI Street, which houses the Sociedad General de Autores (General Society of Authors) (SGAE). It is one of the few modernist structures that has been preserved in Madrid, built in 1902 by José Grases Riera. In Plaza de Santa Barbara, Conde de Villagonzalo Palace by Juan de Madrazo (1866) is still standing, while another unique building called Casa de los lagartos (the House of Lizards) shows influences from Austrian architecture in 1900.

One of its most popular areas is Chueca, the name of a small square dedicated to the famous opera composer. Being one of the oldest areas that started booming since the 80s, it is where the gay community is concentrated. Since then, this place continues to grow in an open and respectful way, with numerous commercial, cultural, and leisure centres. It is also one of the neuralgic points within Madrid's nightlife.

Justicia has become a safe and privileged area where you can go for a stroll and enjoy some of the best pastry shops in Madrid, hence the reason it's referred to as 'barrio dulce' (sweet neighbourhood). The classic establishments such as La Duquesita, with a parisian façade and the typical long queues at the doors, compete with establishments like Mamá Framboise, the first pattiserie of the capital, or Pomme Sucre, with an air of traditional tearooms and aroma of Asturian cakes and pastries.

Today, Justicia has become highly fashionable among the foreign property buyers, due to its special characteristics and privileged middle class status as well as its excellent location. The renovation of old buildings near Fernando VI have increased property prices in this area. It is therefore not surprising that an exclusive district such as Justicia is developing its business, tourism, and cultural sector.
