La Latina neighbourhood, the vitality of Madrid

The neighbourhood of La Latina is one of the oldest and most charismatic areas of Madrid. Although it doesn't belong to an administrative entity as such, it is still locked within the district of Palacio in Centro. This area is located in the centre of the capital. All the locals know this area still retains its irregular and narrow streets that belong to the medieval era. La Latina was a nickname given to the Spanish writer and humanist Beatriz Galindo, who was a preceptor of Queen Isabella in the fifteenth century.

A tour of this neighbourhood is a journey that takes us to the capital's past. When the city consisted of walls all around it, this suburb served as a trading place for many merchants. This area comes with a tradition that has left its mark on names like Plaza de la Cebada, de los Carros, de la Paja, and Rastro, a huge outdoor market.

Plaza de la Cebada is one of the nerve centres of the district. It is home to the old Mercado de la Cebada and Teatro La Latina, one of the most important sites in Madrid. Within a short walking distance, you will come across Plaza de Cascorro, where the statue of Eloy Gonzalo (a Cuban war hero) stand. From here, you can continue the trail down Ribera de Curtidores and see all the interesting sites in the adjacent streets.

In Toledo Street, you can see the popular 19th century Fuentecilla before reaching the Puerta de Toledo. If you head down Gran Via de San Francisco, you will come across la Paloma church, which houses the Virgen painting as well as San Francisco el Grande, one of the most impressive Madrid temples, with its magnificent dome and collection of paintings.

Despite its ancient origins, the centre of La Latina comes alive during weekends, with many tapas restaurants and bars offering food and drinks. However, on weekdays, it is somewhat a quiet neighbourhood where daily life takes place around its streets and squares. The charms of La Latina have become so emblematic that it's become one of the most desirable and exclusive places to live in.

La Latina is without doubt an excellent choice to rent or buy a property in Madrid. But it is best to use a prestigious real estate agency like Engel & Völkers as it has a large portfolio of properties in the most exclusive areas of Madrid.
