The best of each district in Madrid: Chamberí

Chamberí district offers many attractions for people as a place of residence, because it is an area that combines the hearth and the best virtues of the traditional Madrid with open spaces and most innovative urban services, offering its residents an unbeatable quality of life. One of its streets, namely Zurbano, has been considered by newspapers such as the prestigious New York Times as one of the best streets to live in Europe.

Origins and emblematic places

From an administrative point of view, Chamberí is divided into six districts: (Gaztambide, Arapiles, Trafalgar, Almagro, Ríos Rosas and Vallehermoso). In total there are around 150,000 inhabitants, in a district whose origins are linked to its top choice as a place of residence by the Spanish aristocracy of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Hence, there are plenty of buildings with high artistic value and modernist stylistic inspirations, neo-gothic treasures that are as attractive as bygone buildings including 'Hospital de Jornaleros de Maudes' or the 'Basílica de la Virgen Milagrosa' among many others that are declared like the National Monument (Monumento Nacional).

Chamberí is also home to newer buildings, but they are already inextricably linked to the identity of Madrid such as the 'Torres de Colón ', besides the neuralgic points ' Nuevos Ministerios' or the seat of the Constitutional Court. Embassies of several countries, luxury hotels, the Museum of Sorolla or 'Teatros del Canal' (the most innovative and cultural area), also ranks first in a district that has just as much history as the Bravo Murillo and Cea Bermudez.

This is an area that combines the imprint of traditional buildings with urban spaces, designed for the enjoyment of Madrid's residents and visitors.

Chamberí offers a wide range of culinary possibilities, enjoying facilities that conform perfectly to the archetype of classic Madrid tavern, while it is also possible to enjoy a varied range of tapas in Plaza de Olavide, with terraces that are full of people at weekends.

When you explore the entire neighbourhood you can find all kinds of culinary offerings, abounding from places that produce exquisite pinchos to Japanese, Italian or Indian restaurants. Zurbano Street is home to the renowned chef Sergi Arola.

The best of regional culinary such as Galicia, specialises in organic food, or even the omelette is seen as a delicacy, complete with a cuisine that delights every palate.

A wide range of shopping facilities

If the cuisine is rich and varied, just think of the shopping possibilities in Chamberí, since the district has deep-rooted traditional retail clothing, footwear, and boutiques that are truly luxurious as those found in Zurbano Street, without either ignoring the options offered by franchises that are set up in the area.

In addition, Chamberí has one of the largest markets in Madrid called Maravillas.

Various options and plans with children

The district has plenty of greenery that's ideal for children. For example, children have their own enclosed section in the plaza garden Chamberí. Similarly, Santander Park offers more than 120,000 square metres of green area with abundant sports facilities, where you can practice activities with either your family or on your own.

In addition, many restaurants in the area are specially designed for families with children, but if you want to make different plans with them, the best option is to go to the Museum of Natural Sciences ( Museo de Ciencias Naturales) located on the outskirts of town but still very close to Chamberí. During the weekends and school holidays, there are a wide range of exciting activities designed especially for children.
