The best of each district in Madrid: Retiro

The Retiro district is one of the most sought after areas of Madrid, not only because of its location and proximity to Retiro Park, but also for its terraces, shops and services. In this article we want to introduce you to this magnificent part of the city, so you know the best places to eat, shop or go out and its suitability as a future neighbourhood in which to live.

Retiro: what is so charming about this place?

Any property located within the district of Retiro is considered to be in a prime area. Divided into 6 neighbourhoods, the district is located in the city centre of Madrid and has among its attractions a park that bears its name, the Museum and Paseo del Prado, Puerta de Alcalá, the Royal Botanical Gardens (Jardín Real Botánico) and one of the highest concentrations of restaurants in the capital.

In addition to all the above attractions, this neighbourhood is a great place to reside in thanks to its many services, such as a good transport network (has numerous bus lines, metro and Atocha station), several kindergartens and nursery schools as well as the famous Gregorio Marañón Hospital.

The most important places in Madrid between its cardinal points

The most famous point in Retiro district is obviously the park. With more than 118 hectares, thisleisurely area allows locals to enjoy its greenery and the activities that take place in it throughout the year. A highlight, for example, is the Book Fair (Feria del Libro) or the marathons that are regularly organised in the park.

North of the district is the Puerta de Alcalá, one of the distinctive symbols of Madrid. On its western side, you will see the Paseo del Prado and southwest Atocha, Madrid's largest train station. As you can see, Retiro district could not be in a better location.

Restaurants and taverns in the Retiro area: the key to this neighbourhood's success

Retiro district is especially noted for its high concentration of taverns and restaurants. Many locals who move to the area want to enjoy its tapas bars, in particular those found in the popular district of Ibiza, situated between Menéndez Pelayo Street and Gregorio Marañón hospital. The highly recommended ones are Catapa bar and Laredo tavern, but it is also worth walking a few blocks to enjoy the food at Niña de Papá.

If you're looking to treat yourself, then discover Arzábal (Menendez Pelayo, 13) an exceptional restaurant with a terrace that overlooks the Retiro Park. In addition, there is the Reina Sofía museum and its headquarters situated close to this restaurant.

Shopping: all the shops in one area

The neighbourhood's cuisines aren't just in bars or restaurants, but also extend to gourmet food and specialty stores. There is a great variety in the Ibiza district, which is also its famous market, and within its famous streets such as Narváez Street, there are many chain stores with a more of a traditional mix.

Younger people can also enjoy the neighbourhood

Given the proximity to the Buen Retiro park, the area is particularly suitable for families with children. The park has 11 playgrounds and also organises activities for the little ones throughout the year. These activities include performances in the Puppet Theatre or activities within “Los veranos de la Villa” in Madrid.

Outside the park, kids can also enjoy many children's activities which are organised within the Prado Museum or the Royal Botanical Gardens (Real Jardín Botánico).

Enjoy an evening at the Retiro district

The terraces and bars in the neighbourhood of Ibiza are highly prized for their tapas and wine. This is the perfect place to enjoy a beer or glass of wine in the evening. But if you prefer to get away a little from this area and enjoy the other Retiro neighborhoods, then let us recommend you the traditional vermouth of the Bodega Casas winery ( between Atocha and Pacifico) as well as The Suite Bar in AC Palacio Retiro, - a cocktail bar.
