A district that holds much of the most identifiable neighbourhoods in Madrid

Some of Madrid's biggest treasures, covering traces of the past are found in Austrias, or Siglo de Oro de la cultura española (the Spanish culture's vestiges of the Golden Age) are preserved in the Letras district.

While in La Latina or Lavapiés we will find the perfect combination between the best of the older Madrid with all the dynamism, creativity and diversity that the city can offer today. There is also a wide range of nightlife and historic districts such as Malasaña and Chueca.

A world of culinary possibilities

The dining options in any area of Madrid's Centro are endless. You can find whatever you want in a huge range of establishments, all with their own local menus.

For instance, in the Cava Baja area of Austrias we can find taverns, restaurants and more traditional steakhouses in Madrid as well as the mythical Lucio establishments. If we expand our focus to the entire district, the possibilities increase exponentially. Here are some of the best restaurants to suit any appetite including Japanese, Italian, Mexican, Indian, Greek, Arabic and so on.

Similarly, we can find the best regional cuisines such as Basque, Galicia and Asturias, plus vegetarian or vegan options.

Restaurants offer in addition to an exquisite meal, an unbeatable atmosphere with unique and suggestive decorations, such as the legendary Lhardy, located in Carrera de San Gerónimo close to Congreso de los Diputados.

One of the best areas of Madrid for shopping

The area comprising Preciados, Sol and Carmen is one of the best shopping areas of the city, as there are large stores that sell just about anything you can imagine, offering excellent deals for the purchase of any item or product that you may desire.

Also, if you want to buy something different, you will enjoy walking through a quaint and quirky street market, where you can find many unimaginable goods. You can also pay a visit to the legendary Rastro, which is open on Sundays and holiday times around the Ribera de Curtidores.

A lot of planning to do with kids

The neighbourhoods that include the Centro district offer many possibilities for different activities with children. So, you can choose to go to cinemas that show special programs for kids, or attend art centers offering theatrical and magical shows for children, as in the case of Escalera de Jacob en Lavapiés.

For lunch and dinner, you will find many establishments that are designed to accommodate the entire family, while if you look at parks, the best option is the nearby Retiro, where the kids, if they are not too small, can practice many activities. If you follow the map and don't get lost along the way, consider going to the very interesting Rastro, as most of the gadgets are sure to arouse your child's curiosity.

In the field of leisure, you can attend all kinds of theatre shows in Gran Via, while if you want to have a coffee with a literary flavour, in the legendary Café Gijón you will find an emblematic site that has been frequented by many writers and artists.

For a drink, Malasaña is one of the main places in Madrid's nightlife from the time of 'the Madrid scene' ‘la movida madrileña’ in the 80s, or if you prefer a quiet and diverse environment you can opt for Malasaña.
