The most striking buildings in Madrid

Madrid is a great city, full of modern and contemporary buildings. However, it also retains its past and comes with a major architectural history that leaves no one indifferent. So much so that in the capital of Spain some of the most striking buildings in the country are found. Let us look at some examples and give details of the buildings' past and present. The most important ones are Edificio España, Madrid Tower (Torre Madrid) or the set of skyscrapers that are situated in the former Ciudad Deportiva of Real Madrid.

El edificio España

This emblematic building consists of reinforced concrete and is an undisputed star (certainly striking and impressive) of the square that gives it its name. It was built by the Compañía Inmobiliaria Metropolitana (currently Metrovacesa), and owned by the Otamendi family. Two of its owners, Julian and Joaquin Otamendi Machimbarrena ( first an engineer and second an architect), were responsible for creating the design and construction. The works, which began in 1948, did not complete until 1953. Since then this striking and impressive neo-baroque style building has been characterised both by its height (117 metres) and its symmetrical shaped steps. It is considered to be one of the most representative buildings in the Spanish capital. Today it is an empty building owned by a Chinese real estate company called Dalian Wanda.

La Torre Madrid

It happens that this famous 142 metre high building was built, just like the previous one (Edificio España) by the engineer and architect Julián Otamendi shortly after completing the previous construction.

Up until Torrespaña edificio was constructed in 1982, this skyscraper had the honour of being the highest building in Spain with corporate tenants from around the world having the priviledge of living here.

Architectural complex of the financial district Cuatro Torres Business Area

Since 2009, when the final works of Cuatro Torres Business Area completed, it has been possible to see the most amazing and futuristic architectural image of Spain from anywhere in Madrid. The four tall slender towers are called Torre Cepsa, Torre de Cristal, Torre PwC and Torre Espacio.

Moving only a few meters away, you will reach the popular buildings known as Torres Kio or Puerta de Europa (Gate of Europe), which were opened in 1996. These twin office towers have the privilege of being the first skyscrapers in the world.
