The Municipality of Lavena Ponte Tresa consists of two distinct centres. Lavena, which is the historical origin of the Municipality, and Ponte Tresa. The first has as its historical center two residential nuclei. The locality Castello, which can be dated around the twelfth century, and the locality Villa, which was formed around the first half of the eighteenth century. Ponte Tresa has much more recent origins, around 1846, after the construction of the bridge. In the fifties began a remarkable development of Lavena Ponte Tresa due to the border. The most representative local resources are commerce, crafts and tourism. Suggestive natural beauties: Lake Lugano; the picturesque strait, which divides the two basins in Lavena; the International Pass (one of the most important) gives life and is the basis of the local economy. The Municipality of Lavena Ponte Tresa is served by rail transport that connects Varese-Milan-Lugano-Locarno, by the lake with its boats serving Lake Lugano and finally by public transport on wheels, buses, which serves Varese and Luino.
