Colonia del Sacramento es una ciudad en el sur-oeste de Uruguay, por el Río de la Plata, frente a Buenos Aires, Argentina. Es una de las ciudades más antiguas de Uruguay y capital del departamento de Colonia. El Barrio Sur, Distrito Histórico de Colonia del Sacramento, declarado Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1995, es la atracción turística departamental internacionalmente reconocida. Colonia del Sacramento ha conservado sus características originales según su historia colonial muy especial. Fundada en 1680 por el portugués Manuel Lobo, la ciudad pasó del dominio portugués al dominio español varias veces, hasta la Declaración de Independencia en 1825. Estos acontecimientos hicieron que la capital colonial creciera un crisol de estilos arquitectónicos en los que los edificios de estilo colonial portugués y las casas españolas se encuentran justo al lado del otro.
