The square is located at the outlet of Avenue d'Iéna, Rue de Lubeck, Rue de l'Amiral-d'Estaing, Rue Galilée, and Rue Dumont-d'Urville. Rectangular in shape, it covers an area of approximately 10,000 m2, largely occupied by a public garden: Square Thomas-Jefferson.
It is served by line 6 at Boissière station.
This square was opened in 1866-1867 by the City of Paris on the site of the former Chaillot reservoirs, supplied by water from the Seine raised by steam pumps. It absorbed Rue de Juigné and part of Rue de Belloy. It received its current name by an order dated August 16, 1881. The establishment of the gardens located in the middle of the square was the subject of an order dated August 21, 1885.
