Lake Maggiore is the second-largest in Italy by surface area. Its shores are shared between Switzerland (Canton of Ticino) and Italy (the provinces of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Novara, and Varese). About 80% of Lake Maggiore lies in Italian territory and the remaining 20% in Swiss territory. The highest altitude in the drainage basin is Punta Dufour in the Monte Rosa massif. The maximum depth is about 370 m (in the cryptodepression between Ghiffa and Porto Valtravaglia). The most flourishing area is the eastern part of the lake (between Maccagno and Angera), while on the western shore are the renowned towns of Arona, Stresa, and Verbania. Between the latter two lies the Borromean Islands archipelago: Isola Madre, Isola Bella, and Isola Superiore dei Pescatori. Off the Swiss town of Brissago are the two Brissago Islands. Off the coast of Cannero Riviera are the three rocky islets known as the Cannero Castles. Located in the municipality of Leggiuno, on the Lombard shore, is the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso, a monastery built on the rocky coastline, reachable via the staircase that climbs up from the lake or descends from the parking area above. The monastic complex consists of three buildings and dates back to the 14th century, with more recent additions from the 19th century. In more recent times it underwent restoration, completed in 1986. Owned by the Province of Varese, it is entrusted for its care to a Dominican community. Located on the Sacro Monte of San Carlo in Arona, the colossus (commonly called the Sancarlone) is one of the largest statues in the world, measuring more than 35 meters in height. The statue depicts Cardinal Saint Charles Borromeo.
