Agios Stefanos is a lush suburb located in northeastern Attica, between Mount Penteli and Mount Parnitha and only a few kilometers from Marathon Lake. Its history begins with the 1923 Greek–Turkish Convention on the Exchange of Populations, when about one hundred families from the wider area of Constantinople and from Asia Minor arrived here after many hardships. At that time, the only thing here was the train station named Oion. The refugees created Neos Bogati, or Agios Stefanos. Agios Stefanos is surrounded by pine forests and is known to Athenians for its pleasant, cool climate during the summer months. Its population keeps growing with residents from central Athens seeking better living conditions. Moreover, unlike neighboring municipalities that are mainly strictly residential, the local market of Agios Stefanos is fairly large and interesting. The suburban rail station (Athens–Chalkida) and easy access to the national highway facilitate residents’ travel within the Athens metropolitan area.
