Giurdignano is a charming village located in the heart of Salento, in the province of Lecce, Puglia. Known as the ‘megalithic garden of Italy’, this small village boasts an extraordinary archaeological heritage: dolmens and menhirs scattered throughout the countryside, bearing witness to a thousand-year history that has its roots in prehistory. The historic centre of Giurdignano is a maze of cobbled streets, Lecce stone houses and flower-filled courtyards, dominated by the 17th-century mother church dedicated to San Rocco. Not far away, the evocative underground oil mill carved into the rock bears witness to a past linked to oil production, an activity that sustained the local economy for centuries. But what really makes Giurdignano unique is its rural landscape, where history and nature blend harmoniously. Menhirs and dolmens, including the famous Dolmen Grassi, stand mysteriously among centuries-old olive trees, creating an almost sacred atmosphere. This area is in fact part of the so-called Parco dei Megaliti (Megalith Park), an area that also includes the nearby municipality of Minervino di Lecce. An ideal place for those seeking tranquillity, authenticity and culture, Giurdignano is also an excellent starting point for exploring Salento, being just a few kilometres from Otranto and the beautiful Adriatic coast.
